With its volcanic soil, special microclimate and peaceful rural character, the area is an attractive destination for winemakers and nature lovers alike. It is in this natural and historic setting that a forgotten mansion was reborn and a special dream unfolded: the Scharioth Estate.
The estate’s latest chapter is Ízek Kertje (Garden of Flavours), which opened over the Whitsun weekend and sells local delicacies, vegetables, fruit, honey, syrups and, above all, the gold-medal-winning wines of the Mátra. Among others, several members of My Mátra, a community wine brand founded jointly by Mátra wineries, can be tasted here. Over a coffee or a light fröccs (wine spritzer), visitors can also enjoy culinary treats, as there is always some local delicacy on offer.
The garden is open from Thursday to Saturday, and was enthusiastically received by the public from its very first weekend.
On Saturdays, those who simply wish to take a stroll in the park are also welcome, and from time to time guided tours or even photo shoots are possible. It is no coincidence that engaged couples, wedding planners and magazines have taken note of the venue’s special atmosphere.
The estate’s revival began when the Scharioth couple, with German–Hungarian roots and a committed approach to preserving heritage, were planning to move to Hungary.
Originally they were only looking for a quiet house with a garden, but in the end they came across a neglected estate with a historic past in the heart of Nagyréde. The park, the silence and the first impression struck them so powerfully that they could not resist – they felt it could not be a coincidence.
The Scharioth family intends the mansion to be not only a home but also a community space: it hosts concerts and cultural events, and wine tastings and fine dining dinners in the Rhédey Claudia room. Ágnes’s son, Varbai Péter, chef at the Rumour restaurant in Budapest, joins the estate’s events from time to time, serving creative dishes based on local ingredients.
The Scharioth Estate is thus not just another tourist destination in the Mátra, but an example of how respect for the past, a love of nature and quality hospitality can come together in harmony. A place where you can truly pause – at the inspired meeting point of flavours, scents, stories and nature.
