Csontváry exhibition – CODE Veszprém

The latest multisensory digital art journey at CODE in Veszprém transforms the life and art of Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar, one of the most famous figures in Hungarian painting, into a unique immersive experience.

Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar is one of the best-known and best-loved Hungarian painters. Thanks to reproductions that are everywhere, his pictures are etched into Hungary’s collective consciousness, and his iconic works top every art best-of list. Yet his contemporaries considered him a deluded madman, and it was only half a century after his death that the wider public accepted that he had been a painter of genius, one of the greatest figures of modern Hungarian art. His popularity has only grown since, but his life and his body of work – fewer than one hundred and fifty paintings – are still surrounded by secrets and mysteries.

During his short career, he was obsessed with the quest for the “painting of the sun’s path”, for extraordinary effects of light – in other words, the language of photons. This time Csontváry’s works come to life not on canvas but as an audiovisual journey offering special experiences: through the language of light and the movement of photons, with unique visuals and sound, in the various spaces of CODE.

Experience Corridor – Discover the life of a genius!
In the Experience Corridor, a spectacular multimedia exhibition presents the key stages of Csontváry’s life – from his childhood through his years as a pharmacist to becoming a painter. Through animated images, interactive effects and art-historical analysis, visitors can discover how a pharmacist became a visionary painter, how the artist’s worldview and inner universe took shape, and how the Csontváry myth emerged after his death.

Studio – Don’t just look: immerse yourself in the art of the painter of the sun’s path!
In this space, visitors step into a floating, abstract universe where the metamorphosis of Csontváry’s colours, the power of his waterfalls and the light hidden in his skies become audiovisual poetry.

Hexagon – Step into Csontváry’s visions, where painting comes to life all around you!
In the 400-square-metre Hexagon, a 360-degree immersive projection of more than 20 minutes with surround sound brings Csontváry’s visions to life. Drawing on the painter’s autobiography and major works, it follows his travels in five chapters, from Selmecbánya to Baalbek, from the silence of the Carpathians to the cedars of Lebanon. Works such as View of Selmecbánya and The Lonely Cedar come to life here.
