Cycle tourism at Lake Balaton is moving to a new level: the Balaton Bike Hotel (BBH) network has been launched, bringing together accommodation that specialises in cycling guests under uniform quality requirements and guaranteed services. At launch, the scheme welcomes cyclists with 20 partners in the Lake Balaton area.
In recent years, cycle tourism at Lake Balaton has undergone a spectacular transformation thanks to infrastructure developed behind the scenes, a cycling network of more than 1,200 kilometres and the services linked to the BalatonBike365 programme.
One of the new pillars of this development is the Balaton Bike Hotel (BBH) network, which brings together accommodation specialising in cycling guests within a uniform professional and service framework. The concept was presented in Zalakaros as part of the professional programme of the Tour de Zalakaros cycling event.
A uniform quality system for cycling guests
The programme, operated by BalatonBike365 Nonprofit Kft., aims to create a cycling accommodation network of consistently high standards across the Lake Balaton area. The current 20 partners – hotels, guesthouses, holiday homes and apartments – were only admitted to the scheme after meeting strict professional criteria, Szilasi László, the project's professional lead, said at the event.
The initiative is driven by the recognition that the needs of cycling tourists now differ considerably from traditional accommodation search criteria. Secure storage, repair facilities, bike washing, e-bike charging and access to the right information have become basic expectations.
The Balaton Bike Hotel's website, available in four languages (English, German, Italian and Hungarian), details all the cycling services that the brand's standard and premium partners have put in place to welcome guests arriving on two wheels. Beyond the usual filters, you can easily search for the criteria that may be decisive when choosing cycling accommodation.
“Cycling tourists today are no longer simply looking for somewhere to stay,” said the professional lead. He stressed that the aim of the BBH network is not merely to gather together bike-friendly accommodation, but to create a quality community that guarantees a uniform standard of service across the entire Lake Balaton area.
Strict criteria, uniform infrastructure
Accommodation joining the scheme operates under a uniform, detailed set of technical requirements. These include, among others:
• closed or guarded bike storage,
• bike washing facilities,
• basic repair facilities,
• e-bike charging infrastructure.
At premium venues, bikes can even be stored in the room, using special protective bags.
The scheme also includes ongoing monitoring and professional support: partners receive feedback on any shortcomings and can also draw on help with improvements.
The accommodation provides not only infrastructure but also active local-knowledge services: tour suggestions tailored to target groups, family, e-bike, road and gravel routes, and an introduction to cycling services in the area.
This year is all about testing, so no new hotels will be admitted to the network this year, the project's professional lead said.
From Zalakaros to Keszthely – shown in practice
After the press conference, we were able to see the bike-friendly services in action. The Venus Hotel in Zalakaros presented the entire process of welcoming cycling guests: from bike storage and washing facilities to specially designed infrastructure.
We then set off in two groups – on sporty gravel bikes and comfortable e-bikes – on a ride of some 50 kilometres ending in Keszthely. There we were introduced to the cycle-friendly services of a premium BBH partner, the Sirius Hotel. As an extra service, the hotel's guests can even take their bikes up to their rooms, and a 24-hour bike wash is also available on the premises. For the summer season the hotel is acquiring a larger container that will hold 20–25 bikes, Schneider Petra, sales and guest relations manager, said during the tour.
Cycle tourism on a growth path
The development of cycle tourism at Lake Balaton is tracked by two independent measurement systems.
One is the volume of the rental network operated by Balaton Bike Tour, BalatonBike365's service partner. The number of rentals registered in the system rose from 13,961 to 21,824 between 2023 and 2025, an increase of almost 56 per cent.
The other data source is the automatic cycle counters operating in the Lake Balaton area. In 2025 the counting point at Balatonszárszó recorded nearly 170,000 cyclist passages, and the one at Örvényes more than 136,000.
The counter data also show that the cycling season is getting longer. Traffic picks up significantly as early as spring and remains substantial in the autumn months.
One of the most important effects of cycle tourism is that it helps reduce seasonality at Lake Balaton. Significant traffic is also seen in spring and autumn, supported by the infrastructure in place and the steadily expanding range of services. This process is further strengthened by the Balaton Bike Hotel scheme: its aim is not only to serve cycling guests but to create a quality network that contributes, sustainably and over the long term, to strengthening Lake Balaton's position in active tourism.
