You Are Hotel, created from the former Stühmer chocolate factory and headquarters, may open in Szentkirályi utca, Budapest, this summer.
The former Stühmer chocolate factory and headquarters is being reborn as a four-star hotel, with Swietelsky Magyarország as the contractor, Magyar Építők reported. The hotel is expected to open this summer.
The Stühmer Chocolate Factory, one of the most successful Hungarian businesses of the 19th century, built its new factory and office building in 1928. The stone-clad façade of the building at Szentkirályi utca 8 in Budapest concealed numerous functions: Ferenc Kende, the renowned architect of Hungarian art deco, placed the sample shop in its central section, while on the outer axes he created entrances to the factory and the director's flat. On the lower levels of the building, the designers evoked the key motif of the Százszorszép desserts, the Viennese rose baskets, and above the main entrance they placed the crowned central coat of arms, with the first line of the Hungarian Credo (Magyar Hiszekegy) beneath it.
On the plot of the factory and headquarters, a few steps from Rákóczi út, a sweet factory and shop were already operating in 1868; they were extended with courtyard wings on the southern and eastern sides of the courtyard in 1883 and on the northern side in 1927. In 1926 the southern and eastern courtyard sections were rebuilt with two upper floors, while today's street wing was built in 1928–29 in a restrained art deco style. In 1996 the building was converted into a rental office building, when the shopfront of the confectionery shop was also remodelled. After a break of several years, the complex may now be converted into a hotel, commissioned by You Are Hungary Kft., part of a French hotel chain, to designs by D55 Építész Iroda Kft.
A total of 94 rooms will be created in the complex, three of which will have a raised bathroom – in other words, to enlarge the living space, the bed can be placed beneath the bathroom.
Like one of the hotel chain's properties in France, the interiors of You Are Hotel will be marked by youthful contrasts: understated pastel walls frame boldly metal-framed furniture highlighted in daring colours, whose metal grilles and tubular frames are tied together by atmospheric lighting.
In the basement, alongside the kitchen preparation area and plant rooms, there will be a cinema, a fitness room and laundry facilities. The ground floor will house the lobby and the hotel restaurant area with a glazed breakfast zone, as well as the restaurant service area with the kitchen preparation area. On this floor, besides luggage storage and toilets, there are also rooms, which are simply reached from the inner courtyard via glass corridors.
