“American Dream” at the National Museum

Gastronomy

The National Museum’s new temporary exhibition, American Dream (Amerikai álom), explores the fate of Hungarians who emigrated overseas and pays tribute to the upcoming 250th anniversary of the independence of the United States of America.

Through the stories of inventors, artists, athletes and Hollywood stars, as well as the lives of ordinary people, the exhibition shows how Hungarians made their way in their new homeland, some of them achieving world-famous success and creating lasting work. The exhibition also explores the lives of those everyday Hungarians who found a new home overseas.

The exhibition also highlights that the story of Hungarians living in the diaspora is an inseparable part of Hungarian national heritage. Extraordinary life journeys and ordinary fates, successes and failures, homesickness and new beginnings are presented through the objects, from a Hungarian hussar of the War of Independence, through world-famous scientists and artists, to those who quietly built new lives overseas.

The exhibition can be seen in the Rotunda and the Fireplace Rooms of the Hungarian National Museum, as well as in the Dome Hall, where visitors can admire relics such as Lajos Kossuth’s rifle, Albert Szent-Györgyi’s travel bag, Zsa Zsa Gabor’s cocktail dress, Sándor Márai’s typewriter, Zita Szeleczky’s Magyar Rozika costume and Katalin Karády’s cigarette case. One of the exhibition’s special attractions is a 100-year-old Ford Model T.

The exhibition is open to visitors until 1 November 2026.
