A new cultural and community space has been created in one of Budapest’s most exciting neighbourhoods. DUGATTYÚS, the newest arts centre in the Margit Quarter, is a multidisciplinary space that brings together the worlds of contemporary visual art, photography, sculpture, painting, music and theatre.
DUGATTYÚS aims to create an inspiring and interactive meeting point for artists, creators and audiences. The new cultural centre has an analogue photo lab, a coworking space, an editing studio, an exhibition space and a photo studio, and a sound studio is under construction, so it supports artistic and creative processes in a comprehensive way. The exhibition space is complemented by a café, a bistro and a bar to foster community life.
“We had long had our eye on the former customer service office of Díjbeszedő, but it was a very big challenge and took a long time before we could develop a concept that also fits well into the fabric of the Margit Quarter. We consider the multidisciplinary concept of DUGATTYÚS sustainable, and it matches our personal mission – in other words, we can identify with it completely,” said Pálffy András, Managing Director of Dugattyús.
The programme of DUGATTYÚS focuses on supporting talent and building community, and as part of this it organises music events, exhibitions, workshops and interdisciplinary programmes.
The opening also reflected this diversity: alongside better-known acts (e.g. Margaret Island, Blahalouisiana, Aurevoir.), several new performers (e.g. Szlimmy, Avenar, Sick Steez) also introduced themselves, there were actors behind the turntables, and visitors could even pick out the best pieces at a special second-hand clothes market focusing on the 2000s.
The cultural centre thus pays particular attention to collaborations, giving space to as many independent creators and cultural initiatives as possible. Guests are welcome from 8 am on weekdays and from 10 am at weekends, and several special events are planned for the coming weeks.
Every other Wednesday it hosts After Work Fieszta, a programme focused on community building. Dugattyús Talks, a series of round-table discussions exploring important and topical issues, has also been launched. And on the last Sunday of every month, the VIVA Film Club welcomes film lovers.
DUGATTYÚS takes its name from the luxury apartment building built in 1937, known simply as the Dugattyús House (“Piston House”) because of its circular glass lifts. Building on the spirit of the Bauhaus, Dugattyús is home not only to works of art but also to new ideas and experiences.
