Ideas for things to do on cooler days

Gastronomy
Museum Quarter, Sopron

Cold, gloomy days need not stand in the way when we are longing for new experiences. And if we don’t fancy spending our time on the ski slopes, there are great indoor programmes offering worthwhile leisure. If we are looking for a special indoor experience, the city centre of Sopron is sure not to disappoint.

The Sopron Museum Quarter on Fő tér is one of the most carefully designed museum complexes in the country. It is a place that brings together the experience of modernity and the atmosphere of the past. This unique cultural space was created by linking four iconic historic buildings – the Storno House, the General’s House, the Fabricius House and the Firewatch Tower, the symbol of the city.

The Museum Quarter welcomes visitors with ten exhibitions and numerous interactive spaces, so people of all ages can find something interesting to discover. The museum offers several types of ticket. There are tickets for individual exhibitions, while the à la carte ticket lets you see any three exhibitions of your choice. The “All in – from cellar to attic” (“All in – pincétől a padlásig”) ticket is valid for 72 hours and gives access to all of the museum’s exhibitions – an ideal choice for a long weekend.

So what lies within the museum’s walls? Visitors can learn about the history of Sopron from prehistoric times to the present day, gain insight into the relationship between the Holy Crown and the city, discover the Storno family’s remarkable collection and admire the furnishings and furniture of 17th- to 19th-century townhouse apartments. All this brings the past to life in a way that is not only spectacular but truly engaging.

Sopron welcomes visitors in winter too. Whether we combine a city visit with some sporty leisure on the nearby ski slopes or long for a peaceful cultural recharge, a lasting experience is guaranteed despite the cool days.
