In midsummer, the central hall of the Biodome at Budapest Zoo and Botanical Garden will open, offering the public an urban oasis that can be visited all year round.

Visitors will be able to explore the almost one-hectare central part of the 1.7-hectare structure. The new attraction will offer a four-season, weather-independent experience, featuring mainly exotic plants and rare animal species.

Some 13,000 tropical and subtropical plants are being planted in the Biodome, and visitors will also be able to see Hanuman langurs, critically endangered Bali mynas and African spurred tortoises. Besides the zoological and botanical attractions on several levels, the atmosphere of the central hall will be completed by a waterfall cascading from a height of 14.5 metres.

The urban oasis is being created as part of a net HUF 350 million project. HUF 300 million of this comes from the institution’s own operating revenue last year, while a further HUF 50 million was provided as a grant by the Municipality of Budapest.

Work on the Biodome has been under way for months. Thousands of plants will be planted on almost 3,000 square metres of planting area, and a green wall, artificial rock decoration and other visual features are also being created.
