One of Siófok's most beautiful buildings, which operated as a hotel from 1893 and for a time also housed a college, is being renovated. According to the plans, the DE Siófok Campus will open here in September.
According to a notice published in the Public Procurement Bulletin, the former Sió – later Hullám – Szálló building complex near the harbour in Siófok is being renovated. The published document reveals that TÁRS-95 Acélszerkezet és Gépgyártó Építőipari Kereskedelmi Kft. has been commissioned to carry out the work, Turizmus.com reports, citing Magyar Építők.
The hotel complex at the start of Petőfi sétány welcomed visitors to Lake Balaton from 1893, and after 1945 it was used as a holiday home for miners. In the 2000s, following a comprehensive renovation, the former hotel served educational purposes; in recent years it has stood empty.
Last spring it was announced that the University of Debrecen would launch courses in economics, engineering, tourism and health in the well-located building, and would also use it as a conference venue.
At the start of the year, the Educational Authority granted the University of Debrecen's Siófok campus permission to advertise the courses starting there to applicants. According to the plans, the first students will be welcomed at the Siófok campus this September, after the renovation.
