There was a bit of everything, from space flight and box-office hits to an explosion in music – join us as we look at what was happening in the wider world during Day Holiday’s first month in business.
• A historic moment in space exploration: the American Space Shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir for the first time.
• In cinemas, however, the Moon landing does not go to plan: at the premiere of Apollo 13, audiences can relive the nail-biting, near-fatal events of 1970.
• And speaking of films: Batman Forever is released, with Val Kilmer donning the bat suit this time.
• Alanis Morissette releases Jagged Little Pill, the best-selling debut album of all time. It has since sold more than 30 million copies.
• Salt Lake City learns that it will host the XIX Olympic Winter Games in 2002.
