An exhibition presenting the relationship between Pablo Picasso and Hungarian artists opens on 20 June at the Móra Ferenc Museum in Szeged.
The exhibition, opening on the Night of Museums, shows works by Pablo Picasso alongside those of Hungarian artists with whom he worked, was friends, and who influenced him.
The primary aim of the exhibition, on view until the end of the year, is to show how closely Pablo Picasso was connected with Hungarian artists. Picasso met them at various periods, mainly in Paris. The Spanish artist was friends with them and worked with them, and several of them also influenced him.
Visitors to the exhibition will be able to see works by almost forty Hungarian painters and graphic artists, including Czóbel Béla, Aba-Novák Vilmos, Csontváry Kosztka Tivadar, Márffy Ödön and Tihanyi Lajos, as well as Szalay Lajos, whom Picasso called the greatest graphic artist of the 20th century. The title of the exhibition was borrowed from Brassaï (Halász Gyula): the photographer, film-maker and painter began his letters to his acquaintance with the line “Dear Friend, Picasso!” (Drága barátom, Picasso!).
The exhibition also aims to introduce visitors to the Spanish artist’s life and work. To this end, it will use immersive tools and projections as well as reproductions – among others, a full-size copy of Guernica is also on display.
The “Dear Friend, Picasso!” exhibition will feature almost thirty original works by the Spanish artist, including nine ceramics. The works are coming to Szeged from Hungarian public collections, private collectors and from abroad.
