Interview with Lengyel Lili, director of the Balatonfüred Kongresszusi Központ.
How did you come to head the Balatonfüred Kongresszusi Központ?
I have spent more than 25 years in tourism, running my own travel agency for a long time, and I started my career as a congress organiser. I moved from Szeged to Balatonfüred three years ago, and since April 2024 I have had the privilege of heading the Congress Centre – a completely new institution that offers a huge opportunity on the events market.
What made this challenge attractive to an experienced professional?
Balatonfüred and the Lake Balaton region have so far not been present in the top league of the MICE sector, even though they have everything it takes: outstanding infrastructure, premium accommodation, accessibility and a special atmosphere. Launching a centre like this is a unique professional opportunity – we were able to shape the brand identity and positioning from scratch, and today the market is confirming them.
What types of events do you specialise in?
Conferences for 600–1,500 people, medical congresses, corporate events and workshops – these are our main focus areas. We also think it is important to keep the destination alive outside the high season with cultural programmes: with music and theatre events we support the “four-season Lake Balaton” concept.
Why can this venue be competitive on the Hungarian and international MICE market?
Unique options for using the space (e.g. a plenary hall for 650 people, a floor area of 4,500 m² and premium technical support), in-house catering, excellent acoustics and a modular spatial structure. The centre is within walking distance of the lakeshore, galleries, a Michelin-starred restaurant and hotels. Such a concentrated experience package is rare.
What goals have you set for the future?
Our goal is clear: to be first on the preference list of event organisers in Hungary and to put ourselves on the map of international MICE venues. To achieve this, we are building on destination-level cooperation, sustainable operation and a premium experience. A 4* superior conference hotel is also opening right next to the centre.
What message would you give to representatives of the MICE sector?
