Baroque wedding, Győr

On 8 and 9 August, Győr’s city centre will once again be dressed in Baroque splendour for this year’s Baroque Wedding (Barokk esküvő) festival. The highlight of the event will again be the wedding ceremony on Saturday evening on Dunakapu tér, amid a whirl of dancers, costumed performers and fairground comedians.

This year the programmes will take place on Széchenyi tér and Dunakapu tér and on Radó Island. Radó Island will be filled with heritage performers and unique, hand-painted giant wooden games. On Széchenyi tér, the enchanting splendour of a Baroque garden comes to life again, with handicrafts, authentic heritage groups and children’s programmes awaiting visitors. On Friday, on the festival’s main stage on Dunakapu tér, artists of the Győr National Theatre will perform Gaetano Donizetti’s one-act comic opera Il campanello (A csengő).

Visitors can also join themed sightseeing walks, and on both days of the event Baroque music, dancing and a costumed parade will entertain the audience. On Saturday, the trumpet department of the Richter János Secondary School of Music will greet the festive day with fanfares from the balcony of the Lloyd Palace. The Győri Barocco Dance Group will take the stage several times, and a fairy-tale performance awaits children.

Alongside performances by musical ensembles, the programme also includes porcelain painting and rose-making demonstrations, as well as a dance performance.

At 7 pm, some two hundred costumed extras will set off from the square in front of the City Hall, accompanying the engaged couple and their wedding party to Dunakapu tér, where at eight o’clock, following the customs of the period, the couple will pledge eternal fidelity to each other. The evening closes with Baroque festivities and a folk dance party.

Apart from the themed walks, all programmes of the event are free of charge.
