For a mere USD 1 million deposit, suites can already be booked in the first permanent extraterrestrial structure. The Moon hotel awaits guests with plenty of programmes and a panoramic view of the Earth.
American start-up GRU Space (Galactic Resource Utilization) aims to open the first lunar hotel in 2032; it would consist of inflatable modules covered with the layer of dust found on the Moon’s surface.
Among the start-up’s financial backers are, of course, Elon Musk and SpaceX, and construction would begin in 3 years’ time. The hotel, billed as the first permanent extraterrestrial structure ever built, is the brainchild of Berkeley graduate Skyler Chan, whose company, Galactic Resource Utilization Space (GRU), launched its booking website on 12 January and presented the details of the hotel.
Construction is expected to begin in 2029, and the first to book are expected to be mainly former space tourists and newlyweds dreaming of an out-of-this-world honeymoon.
The start-up’s staff stress that tourism is very important for getting the lunar economy and space infrastructure off the ground and paving the way for interplanetary travel, according to an article on index.hu.
According to the plans, the hotel’s entertainment team will play a big role in organising special programmes, including walks on the lunar surface, driving a lunar rover and lunar golf. The more distant future would bring the creation of lunar bases and expansion towards Mars.
