Concerts, Advent walks and literary evenings await visitors at the Várkert Bazár

Major concerts, family programmes, Advent walks, literary and dance evenings, as well as an applied arts fair and an outdoor exhibition await families between 29 November and 31 December in the Várkert Bazár’s Advent programme series.

At the St Nicholas family day on 6 December the Kolompos band will perform and the puppet musical Kippkopp in the Snow (Kippkopp a hóban) will be shown; on Advent Sundays free craft sessions will offer the chance to make Advent wreaths in the atrium of the Event Hall, and Hungarian applied artists will also sell their own wares at the Advent fair in the De la Motte–Beer Palace from 12 to 14 and 19 to 21 December.

The outdoor exhibition “Let There Be Celebration on Earth! – The World of Our Retro Winters” (Legyen ünnep a Földön! – Retro teleink világa) presents the material culture of winter and the holidays in the second half of the 20th century, through cultural-historical objects selected from the collection of the Hungarian Museum of Trade and Tourism and informative texts.

Budapest Bár will give a double concert on 7 December, and Honeybeast will perform its production Összhang – nyitány on 13 December.

On 17 December the guest will be Soltész Rezső and his band, whose concert will feature symphonically arranged songs from the artist’s latest double album, as well as Christmas classics such as Silent Night and ABBA’s Happy New Year. The singer will be accompanied by the Szolnok Symphony Orchestra, pianist Rátonyi Róbert Jr. and a traditional beat band, with actor Lukács Sándor as the concert’s guest.

Hungarian-American singer-songwriter Urbányi Zóra returns to the Várkert Bazár stage on 20 December with her double concert “One Evening, One Feeling, One Voice” (Egy este, egy érzés, egy hang), and the following day the StEfrem Male Choir will present its Advent and Christmas programme with guest Szirtes Edina Mókus. Ivan & The Parazol will perform on 27 December, and the following day the Modern Art Orchestra will celebrate its 20th anniversary with a gala concert, whose guests will include Harcsa Veronika and Törőcsik Franciska.

As in previous years, Random Trip will play the pre-New Year’s Eve concert on 30 December, and the Várkert Bazár audience can celebrate New Year’s Eve at Be Massive’s electronic party.

Throughout Advent, festive decorations, charcoal-grilled Christmas specialities and hot drinks await passers-by on the terrace of Halászó gyerekek, while at the Advent fair in the De la Motte–Beer Palace on Dísz tér contemporary applied artists will welcome visitors not only with their wares but also with special workshops, in cooperation with the Rearticon Applied Arts Association. In addition, on Advent Sundays free craft sessions will offer the chance to make Advent wreaths, small gifts and decorations in the atrium of the Event Hall. Advent walks are also organised under the title Sisi’s Christmas (Sisi karácsonya).

On 14 December the Hungarian National Dance Ensemble will perform Winter Dance (Téli tánc), which brings to life forgotten and vanishing Hungarian traditions and the customs of feast days, and on 18 December the Aposztróf literary evening will be held under the title Fölötte álom-éneket dúdolnak. The evening’s guests will be actress and singer Gubik Petra, singer Mező Misi and musician and writer Kollár-Klemencz László.
