Dinnyés Castle Park

A miniature railway running to a timetable has been launched at Dinnyési Várpark (Castle Park), further enriching the offering of the five-time Guinness World Record-holding Várpark and Skanzen, which presents reconstructions of medieval Hungarian castles as well as a settlement from the Árpád era.

The idea for the miniature railway came from the ten-year-old son of the owner, Zoltán Alekszi. The track is more than half a kilometre long and runs around the two-hectare site of the Skanzen along the Wall of Saints (Szentek Fala). The trains, which depart every half hour, are pulled by a 400 cc petrol locomotive; the two locomotives have been named Kos and Jerke.

The aim of the Várpark is heritage preservation and education. What makes it special is that it displays scaled-down replicas of medieval Hungarian castles that today survive only as ruins, built on the basis of reconstruction concepts.

The Skanzen features a reconstruction of an Árpád-era settlement, where two 11th-century wooden churches, a wagon fort and a palisade fort stand alongside period pit houses, buildings showing animal husbandry, and a pottery exhibition covering the Carpathian Basin.
