Europe Day: concerts, a running race and civil society programmes in Budapest

Events industry
Europe Day

Hungary’s accession to the European Union will be celebrated on 11 May in Budapest’s Szabadság tér (Liberty Square) with a Europe Day festival, family programmes, a running race and concerts.

All day long, the information tents will welcome visitors with creative activities, quizzes and games, and they can also find out about the European Union and the opportunities that membership brings.

The programmes start as early as the morning in Szabadság tér: participants in the 21-kilometre race, held in honour of the 21 years, will set off after a joint warm-up. The route of the race showcases 21 successful EU-funded projects: one from each of the 19 counties, one from Budapest and, as a bonus, one of the winning projects of the 2024 RegioStars competition.

This sporting event, which has now become a tradition, is so popular that registration filled up almost immediately. The runners on the starting line will include actress Diána Nyári, Olympic silver and bronze medallist swimmer László Cseh, television and radio presenters Tamás Gajdos and János Vadon, three-time Olympic champion water polo player Gergely Kiss, and dancer Júlia Széphalmi.

After the start of the race there will be children’s programmes: following the concert by Krisztián Grecsó and the Pici Szív Tánczenekar, the Majorka theatre will perform, followed in the afternoon by the Rutkai Bori Banda and the Apacuka Zenekar.

The official opening of Europe Day will be held at 12 noon on the main stage, where the welcome speeches will be followed by the award ceremony for the race.

From 2 p.m., Márk Járai (Halott Pénz) will be followed by András Lovasi’s concert LOVASI: Egy az egybe …csak maga, after which Co Lee (Live Band) will give a free concert on the main stage.

Throughout the event, the tents of various organisations, including EU institutions, will welcome visitors.
