Buda Roller Mill

The latest project of the Város és Folyó Egyesület (City and River Association, Valyo), turning the Hengermalom into a community space, continues. Following eight weekends between May and July, city residents can enjoy the mill’s spaces and programmes for a further seven weeks from 29 August to 12 October.

Valyo has a decade of experience in making urban spaces more liveable and community-oriented, and in the sustainable and ethical development of the Danube riverbank. Community participation, knowledge sharing and community building play a key role in their work.

They are working with Építész stúdió to bring the iconic building complex of the Budai Hengermalom back to life. The aim is to create a community space in Újbuda’s transforming neighbourhood that develops in line with the values of local residents and Valyo. By gradually opening the Hengermalom, they intend to turn a previously abandoned site into a place with its own identity, open to everyone.

In the second half-season, running over seven weekends, Valyo is preparing new features alongside the familiar programme elements. Pop-up exhibitions will follow one another in the mill in cooperation with the Fiatal Képzőművészek Stúdiója (Studio of Young Artists), while the iconic spaces of the Silo will serve at times as an immersive party venue, at times as a pop-up skate park or as a site-specific theatre space – and the Hengermalom will also be part of Valyo’s upcoming 15th birthday programme series.

The Hengermalom site has also undergone several changes. In the “Galéria” and “Felnézést” spaces in the mill building, exhibitions change every two weeks, so the spaces are constantly renewed, always connecting in a different way to the mill’s past and to the questions of everyday life around it. In the courtyard, turned into a public space with street furniture, the still-operating Hengerbár and plants, local residents can gather and create something new together among the rollers.
